Held from September 3-6 at the Istanbul Tüyap Congress and Fair Center, WorldFood Istanbul 2024 stood out with record-breaking participation. The fair brought together 1,276 exhibitors and 2,899 brands from 43 countries, attracting a total of 72,864 visitors from 155 countries. Throughout the event, various activities and seminars were organized in collaboration with 35 sectoral institutions and organizations.
Arkas Line participated in the “Resilience and Collaboration in the Food Sector” panel alongside key players in the food and agriculture sectors, such as Anadolu Efes, Pepsico, and Tiryaki Agro. During the panel, Serra Tükel, Sustainability Director of the Arkas Maritime Group, shared insights on Arkas Line and its group companies’ sustainability-focused projects. Tükel emphasized that container shipping plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, hygiene, and efficiency within the food supply chain. She also highlighted that 20% of Arkas Line’s shipments consist of food products. Tükel elaborated on the use of specialized containers tailored to the shelf life, temperature control, and insulation needs of a wide range of food products, including cocoa, coffee, malt, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, and packaged goods. Additionally, she announced that Arkas Line had started biofuel trials in Turkey for the first time, as part of its green transportation goals.
Details about the Pepsico and Arkas Rail project, which serves as an example of sustainable supply chain collaborations aimed at reducing carbon emissions in land transportation, were shared by Esra İren, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Pepsico Turkey, and Serra Tükel on behalf of Arkas. It was revealed that, for the first time in Turkey, electric train transportation was used between two Pepsico factories, resulting in an 83% reduction in carbon emissions over 1,600 km.
