The Arkas TURMEPA II waste collection boat, launched in 2006 through a collaboration between Arkas Holding and TURMEPA, is now in its 18th season, dedicated to keeping the bays of Cesme clean. The project is crucial for promoting sustainable marine tourism and preserving the habitat in the region.
Arkas TURMEPA II, a social responsibility project launched in 2006 in cooperation with Arkas Holding and the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA), continues its mission to protect the bays of Cesme in the Aegean Sea from pollution. The ARKAS TURMEPA II waste collection boat, constructed and operated by Arkas Holding, has recently commenced its activities for the 2024 summer season. By collecting waste, the boat plays a crucial role in preserving the habitat in the bays of Cesme. The ARKAS TURMEPA II waste collection boat, which has collected 2.2 million liters of waste in the bays of Cesme during the 17 years between 2006 and 2023, ensuring that 18 million liters of seawater remain clean, continues its operations in the bays frequented by yacht and tourist boat owners this summer.
Arkas TURMEPA II collected 135,000 liters of waste from 832 boats last year. Thus, 1.1 million liters of seawater was kept clean. The wastewater collected is equivalent to the wastewater produced by 685 people per day. Protecting the seas, which absorb most of the global heat, from wastewater is crucial for preserving the marine ecosystem. Furthermore, research shows that the seas produce more than half of the oxygen we need. This means that the Arkas TURMEPA II waste collection boat and similar projects also contribute to the continuity of life on land.
