Three Powerful Women, One Table: Lucien Arkas Art Center Welcomed Marie Ndiaye

Lucien Arkas Art Center hosted Marie Ndiaye, a prominent international voice in contemporary literature, in Izmir. The special roundtable discussion, organized in collaboration with Institut Français Izmir, brought together literature, journalism, and political science through the transformative perspective of women.

Lucien Arkas Art Center has introduced a new addition to its programs supporting international cultural dialogue. Marie Ndiaye, regarded as one of the most distinguished writers of contemporary French literature and visiting İzmir within the scope of the Goncourt Choice of Türkiye, met with readers at the roundtable discussion held at the center.

At the event organized under the theme “A Meeting of Three Strong Women,” literature, journalism, and political science were explored through the perspectives of influential women from different disciplines. In the discussion, Marie Ndiaye was accompanied by journalist and author Güldenay Sonumut and political scientist Prof. Dr. Ayşen Uysal. Topics such as female identity, power, representation, social structure, and the transformative role of narrative were examined through a multi-layered dialogue shaped by the participants’ varied experiences.

Power and Representation Discussed Through the Female Experience

Marie Ndiaye, known for exploring universal themes such as identity, belonging, invisibility, and the female experience with a deeply nuanced narrative style, underlined in the discussion that literature is not merely an aesthetic domain, but also a powerful space of thought that challenges social structures. The representation of women in the public sphere, their voices, and their struggle for visibility were examined through both literary production and political and media practices.

The discussion developed around a shared understanding of how women’s rising influence in culture, academia, and media contributes to the enrichment of intellectual production. Contributions from different disciplines highlighted that the female experience is not singular, but plural, layered, and inherently transformative.

A Meaningful Contribution to İzmir’s Intellectual Life

Held at Lucien Arkas Art Center, this roundtable meeting moved beyond being simply a literary discussion, creating a unique setting for interdisciplinary dialogue, public debate, and critical reflection. Organized in accordance with the center’s vision to strengthen international engagement in culture and the arts, the event offered a valuable contribution to İzmir’s intellectual life.

The discussion, conducted in French, was followed with simultaneous interpretation into Turkish. Organized with limited capacity, the event was attended by a wide audience interested in the world of literature and thought.
