Seçkin Gul, General Manager of Arkas Bunker, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability at the 9th Green Shipping Summit, an event focused on advancing sustainable maritime practices. Seçkin Gul stated that as a company, they have adopted an innovative approach and that they apply this innovative approach to sustainability as well.
The 9th Green Shipping Summit, held in Rotterdam on January 28-29, focused on the future of the maritime industry, regulations, and new sustainability initiatives.
“We Stand by All Shipowners in Their Sustainability Goals”
Seçkin Gul participated as a panelist at the summit, which brought together maritime company officials, port authorities, policy regulators, suppliers, and technology providers. He joined the panel discussion on “Case Studies and Green Projects in Compliance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Criteria: Strategies for Sustainable Shipping” on the first day of the event.
Seçkin Gul stated: “As the first ISCC-EU (International Sustainability and Carbon Certificate) certified biofuel bunkering company in Türkiye, we have been dedicated for many years to finding solutions that align with international regulations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. For the past few years, we have dedicated significant time to researching sustainable marine fuels,” Gul said. “Around four years ago, we shifted our focus to biofuels and began R&D activities on biocomponents. This led us to become Türkiye’s first ISCC-EU certified maritime company, achieving our 2024 goal ahead of schedule. We’re now offering our ISCC-EU certified product, ‘Bio24F,’ to shipowners. This biofuel will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels, marking another first for sustainable maritime fuels in Türkiye.”
Gul also explained the company’s collaboration with leading shipowners worldwide following the first biofuel supply to Arkas Line’s Matilde A last May. “We are now accelerating our efforts,” he said. “We’ve seen that using BIO24F not only reduces shipowners’ carbon tax obligations under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) but also significantly lowers CO2 emissions. We’re eager to work with shipowners not only in Türkiye but globally to create cleaner seas through customized solutions.”
This year’s Green Maritime Summit, held under the theme “Decarbonizing Ships through Operational Excellence: Making the Most of Innovation and Collaboration,” saw participation from over 200 companies across more than 20 countries. The summit is of great importance in terms of creating a holistic roadmap for achieving decarbonization across the maritime sector, establishing new benchmarks for collaborative problem-solving, and fostering industry alignment.
