Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, is a “digital prodigy” who has drawn close attention in recent years. Suleyman, a co-founder of the artificial intelligence company DeepMind acquired by Google, and in 2022 he established Inflection AI, an artificial intelligence company notable for its machine learning and productivity features, after departing DeepMind.
Born in London in 1984, Mustafa Suleyman is a figure closely followed for his brilliance, his influence on the era, and his ideas. Let’s take a closer look at this remarkable mind who now leads Microsoft’s AI division.
He is the son of a Syrian immigrant father. His father, who moved from Syria to England, worked as a taxi driver, while his mother was an English nurse. The family, living in Islington, have two other sons. As a working-class family, they lived quite modestly. The children’s education reflected this as well. They all studied in state schools.
Getting into Oxford and Leaving
Mustafa Suleyman attended Thornhill Primary School and then Queen Elizabeth’s School, a boys’ secondary school. By a twist of fate, he became close friends there with the brother of Demis Hassabis, his future co-founder of DeepMind. Even in those years, Mustafa Suleyman and Demis Hassabis would discuss how to create positive impact in the world.
He began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Oxford, but at the age of 19 (in 2003), he left Oxford, where millions dream of becoming students.
Support for Mamdani
In 2001, during a period when Mustafa Suleyman identified himself as a “strong atheist,” he assisted Muhammed Mamdani in setting up a telephone counseling service called the “Muslim Youth Helpline.” This organization later went on to become one of the largest mental health support services, surprising many.
He worked as a human rights policy officer for the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. He later founded Reos Partners, a “systemic change” consulting company that uses conflict resolution methods to tackle social issues. He acted as a negotiator and facilitator for clients across various domains, including the United Nations, the Netherlands Government, and WWF.
Artificial Intelligence at the Age of 26
By 2010, Mustafa Suleyman had founded DeepMind Technologies, an artificial intelligence and machine learning company. The company soon established its credibility and became one of the sector’s leading firms. Less than four years after its founding, Google acquired DeepMind for £400 million, making it one of the largest company acquisitions in Europe at the time.
Mustafa Suleyman became head of applied artificial intelligence at DeepMind and worked to make the company’s technology compatible with Google products.
By 2016, attention had once again shifted to this visionary young entrepreneur. He presented DeepMind Health at the RSM (Royal Society of Medicine). DeepMind Health produces technologies that allow the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and other partners to advance healthcare services. They engaged in research collaborations with numerous institutions, including Moorfields Eye Hospital.
A Criticized Leadership Style
In August 2019, he was placed on administrative leave over claims that he had bullied employees. During the investigation carried out by an external lawyer, Suleyman left DeepMind to take up a vice president role at its parent company, Google. His management style was said to be below expectations. This seemed to be a courteous way of implying that he was a poor manager.
In that same year, he took on a role on the board of directors of The Economist Group. In 2022, he left Google and became a venture partner at Greylock Partners.
While at Greylock, he co-founded Inflection AI, a new artificial intelligence laboratory initiative, with Reid Hoffman. Founded with the objective of utilizing artificial intelligence to assist people in speaking with computers, the company secured $225 million in funding from companies including Google and Meta.
In 2023, Inflection AI introduced a chatbot called “Pi,” standing for Personal Intelligence. Pi remembers past conversations and gradually gets to know the user, and according to Suleyman, it will be the “chief of staff” of the future. Pi also asks questions, both establishing dialogue and providing emotional support.
According to Mustafa Suleyman, artificial intelligence is no longer a tool but has become a form of relationship.
And the Journey Led to Microsoft
In March 2024, Mustafa Suleyman was appointed as CEO of Microsoft’s artificial intelligence company, Microsoft AI, and Vice Chairman of the Board. What Microsoft, which entered the game quite late, will do is being awaited with great curiosity.
Mustafa Suleyman, who was selected by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the field of artificial intelligence in 2023 and 2024, is also a recipient of the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Artificial Intelligence and Ethics
He established a research unit called DeepMind Ethics and Society to examine the real-world impacts of artificial intelligence and to help technology experts put ethics into practice. He is also a founding co-chair of the Partnership on AI, which includes representatives from companies such as Amazon, Apple, DeepMind, Meta, Google, IBM, and Microsoft.
Mustafa Suleyman co-authored the book “The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-First Century’s Greatest Dilemma” with researcher Michael Bhaskar, exploring the transformative and potentially dangerous effects of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and synthetic biology.
According to Suleyman, while artificial intelligence has the potential to bring “radical abundance,” address climate change, and empower people with low-cost problem-solving capabilities, it may also advance its own design and production processes and reach a dangerous stage. He believes that global oversight and control are essential due to the possibility of catastrophic misuse.
There is no doubt that we will hear his name more often in the coming years.
