Arkas Line was honored at the Sustainable Business Awards for its jointly implemented “Use of Biofuels in the Maritime Industry” project with Arkas Bunker. The joint initiative of the two companies, which have pioneered biofuel supply and biofuel bunkering operations for vessels in Türkiye’s maritime sector, was awarded in the “Collaboration – Private Sector & Private Sector” category. The project stands out as one of the significant steps taken by Arkas Line in line with its transition to low-carbon maritime transportation and its net-zero emissions vision.
Organized by the Sustainability Academy, the Sustainable Business Awards were presented at a ceremony held at Swissôtel The Bosphorus Istanbul on 29 September 2026. Following the evaluation of 69 independent jury members who are experts in their respective fields, the joint project of Arkas Line and Arkas Bunker, “Use of Biofuels in the Maritime Industry,” received an award in the private sector collaborations category.
28% Reduction in Carbon Emissions Through the Use of Biofuels
The biofuel initiative launched in 2024 through the collaboration of Arkas Line and Arkas Bunker was implemented on a larger scale in 2025 through increased usage volumes and a higher biofuel blend ratio. The first bunkering operation of BIO24F, supplied by Arkas Bunker, the first company in Türkiye’s maritime fuel sector to obtain the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), was carried out in 2024 on Matilde A, a container vessel operated by Arkas Line. As a result, Arkas Line became the first container shipping company in Türkiye to use biofuel.
Containing a bio-component derived entirely from used vegetable cooking oils, BIO24F enabled the reduction of carbon emissions without requiring any technical modifications to the vessels’ existing engines. Through the use of BIO24F, Arkas Line achieved a 22.8% reduction in carbon emissions per voyage across its vessels. With BIO30F, introduced in late 2025, this figure increased to 28%, while the use of BIO100 raised the reduction rate to over 80%.
Strong Collaboration on the Decarbonization Journey
The biofuel project not only contributes to Arkas Line’s efforts to combat climate change and achieve its low-carbon transportation objectives, but also demonstrates that sustainable transformation can be achieved through strong partnerships. The collaboration between Arkas Line and Arkas Bunker supports the wider adoption of sustainable solutions in the maritime industry by contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
