The new exhibition organized by Arkas Art and Centre Pompidou, “Lumina: The Art of Color and Light,” will open to the public at Lucien Arkas Art Center on September 26. Focusing on the role of color and light in modern and contemporary art, the exhibition will bring a new art experience of international scale to İzmir.
Arkas Art continues to advance its vision for arts and culture in İzmir through a new exhibition presented as part of its five-year program developed in collaboration with Centre Pompidou. Following the opening of the Lucien Arkas Art Center in April, the venue will now host “Lumina: The Art of Color and Light,” an exhibition that explores the transformative role of color and light throughout the history of art.
Spanning artistic approaches from the early twentieth century to the present day, the exhibition explores the relationship between the expressive power of color and the transformative force of light. Reminding viewers that visual experience extends beyond the act of looking and is shaped by movement, depth, vibration, rhythm and sensory perception, “Lumina: The Art of Color and Light” invites audiences to reflect on the interplay between color, light and the eye.
Curated by Anna Hiddleston and Noémie Fillon –Associate Curator-, at Musée national d’art modern-Centre Pompidou, the exhibition examines the ways in which modern and contemporary art engages with seeing through perception, space, movement and viewer experience. “Lumina: The Art of Color and Light” positions color not merely as a visual element, nor light simply as a source of illumination, but as fundamental fields of expression shaping artists’ explorations of form, emotion, rhythm and experience. It also marks one of the major steps in the broader cultural program that will unfold around color and light at Lucien Arkas Art Center.
In April, Lucien Arkas Art Center welcomed visitors with “Sonia & Robert Delaunay: Inventing Modern Colour,” a selection of works from Centre Pompidou collection. That first presentation marked the beginning in İzmir of the long-term partnership between Arkas Art and Centre Pompidou. The emphasis on color introduced in the Delaunay selection now expands into a broader narrative with “Lumina: The Art of Color and Light.”
Enriched by talks, workshops, and interdisciplinary events accompanying its exhibitions, this approach will further support the evolving identity of Lucien Arkas Art Center as a living cultural space. Located in Mistral İzmir, the center will continue to strengthen its position as a new destination for art in the city, bringing international collections and contemporary curatorial approaches together with audiences in İzmir.
