Arkas Line ‘Green Office’ Winners Announced

The 2024 winners of the Green Office Awards, organized as part of Arkas Line’s environmentally focused sustainability program, have been announced. Following a year-long project with participation from both local and international offices and employees, Arkas Russia office earned the title of “Green Office of the Year” for demonstrating top performance in energy efficiency and environmental practices.

As the first container shipping company in Türkiye to publish a sustainability report, Arkas Line has added a new initiative to its environmental projects. Launched in 2023, the Green Office Award Program aims to reduce the environmental impact of office spaces while raising awareness among employees about sustainable living habits. The program promotes eco-friendly practices and places sustainability at the core of daily work routines.

2024 Winners Announced

Employees who ranked among the top 10 by collecting the highest number of ecopoints via the ecordingApp were honored at an award ceremony held on June 16 at Arkas Matthey’s Mansion.

Arkas Russia was awarded the 2024 Green Office Award. Accepting the award on behalf of the office were Arkas Russia General Manager Svetlana Goncharenko and Arkas Maritime Group Russia Representative Coskun Kasimoglu, who received it from Arkas Line Executive Board Member Cenk Deger. All employees who exceeded 20,000 ecopoints through individual participation in the ecordingApp were awarded a specially designed thermos and tote bag featuring the “Blue for Green” logo. Additional special gifts were presented to the top 10 employees who recorded the highest number of sustainable behaviors in the app.

During the event, guests also had the opportunity to tour the Anatolian Carpet Collection from the 16th to 19th centuries exhibited at Arkas Art Bornova, and to learn about the history of Matthey’s Mansion, built in 1780 and restored by Arkas between 2018 and 2023. The ceremony concluded with a cocktail reception following the opening speeches and awards presentation.

Concrete Steps in Sustainability

Taking pioneering steps toward a greener future, Arkas Line continues to lead in sustainability. It was the first container shipping company in Türkiye to publish a sustainability report. Additionally, Arkas Line became the first company in Türkiye to supply ISCC-certified marine biofuel (BIO24F), paving the way for low-emission maritime transport. Through its “Book for Green” initiative, the company offers next-generation certification solutions that support emission reductions in the supply chain.

The company’s “Blue for Green” app, developed to reduce the carbon footprint in office environments and encourage environmentally friendly habits, has become a key tool in boosting employee engagement.

In Line with Green Standards

A member of EcoVadis since 2015, Arkas Line received a Bronze Medal in 2024, based on performance in categories such as Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. The company also reports to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which promotes corporate transparency on global issues such as climate change and water security. In the Climate Change category, Arkas Line earned a C score in the 2024 assessment.

Arkas Line integrates energy-efficient technologies into its operations, using equipment with FUELWISE software in 12% of its reefer transportation. This results in up to 20% energy savings per unit and a total emissions reduction of 208.65 mtCO2e. Improvements through propeller replacements and scrubber systems also help reduce sulfur emissions in Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

Within its 19-year partnership with the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA), Arkas Line’s TURMEPA II waste collection vessel has removed 2.3 million liters of waste from Cesme’s bays, helping to keep approximately 19 million liters of seawater clean.
