Somebody with a Happy Birthday on 31st of March / Leyla Güvenç

Leyla Guvenc, one of our columnists at Arkas Academy, shares her insights in our readers’ column. The text, imbued with emotional depth as a tribute and remembrance, commemorates Halit Suphi Guvenc, who served at Arkas Line CMC unit from 2002 to 2017… We remember him fondly and with deep respect…

Picture a die-hard Fenerbahce fan so devoted that even on the most significant and memorable occasions, they attend the Fenerbahce game over other commitments, yet face no criticism for it. When they step into the team’s store, they eagerly purchase every available product, citing, “It’s all for the club, it’s all for the club!” They jokingly plead, “Hey, friends, restrain me!” to resist buying yet another Fenerbahce item to take home, yet three-quarters of their wardrobe still proudly display the iconic yellow blue.

Imagine a citizen from the Black Sea region, whose mispronunciation of words bring a smile to everyone’s faces…

Imagine a student; they help their friends with maths so they can get into METU, but they can only get into Istanbul Technical University Ship and Marine Technology Engineering Department from the reserve quota because they don’t study their own lessons even though they are very smart, however, they do homework and projects for 3 days and 3 nights without sleep and finish second in their department.

Imagine a quantitative department student who, after just one year at the Bilkent MBA Department (Ankara), left their master’s degree unfinished, saying “these books are too thick, there is too much to read; I’ll just go join the army”…

Imagine an excel genius; they flip macros, they can find a complete result in a few minutes of work by using an average of 32 “IF” codes in the formulas of reports that normally take 2 days to generate.

Imagine a person; just when you think that they agree with you, they start sentences like “… let’s look at it from this point of view” and with their admirable logic, they come out on top without you realizing, and turn you 180 degrees in almost every subject…

Imagine a flavor hunter; if they feel like it at midnight, they go all the way to Bursa to eat Iskender and in 99% of the bets they make with their friends, they set the condition that “the loser buys dinner”.

Imagine a basketball player; although they have undergone two surgeries for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in their knee, they still never leave the court and keep their love with the ball alive…

Imagine a colleague; no matter how old they are, they still can’t give up mischief, their fellow colleagues have to show great courage in the face of their mischievous grinning face to get on the same lift with them.

Imagine a sine X curve, whose spirits are usually through the roof and sometimes completely down, but who does whatever it takes to avoid seeing unhappy people around…

Imagine a proper man who puts the needs of everyone he loves above his own priorities, who makes every possible sacrifice for them without hesitation and without a second thought…

Imagine a warrior who, even when they receive the worst news about their health, when asked “what are we going to do, how are we going to deal with this situation?” can say “never mind, let’s play backgammon”.

Imagine an Arkas employee who has never known a company other than the one they started as a new graduate, who, during their illness between their 11th and 15th year, agonized over “how will I inform my managers that my rest report has been extended again?”, who, even in intensive care, looks up and says “let’s inform the company, we need to hand over those empty containers, the daily rents are too high”…

The most perfect son, brother, spouse, friend and father one can be: a person who brought beauty to the world with their colors for 40 years in spite of those who said, “He is born at 8 months, his chances of survival are very low…”, and who is remembered with a true human being’s smile when they left this world, even though it hurts all their acquaintances:

2002 – 2017 Arkas Line CMC dept. – Halit Suphi Guvenc

Even though he hasn’t been able to blow out a birthday candle for the last 7 years, I appreciate your constant remembrance, commemoration, and efforts to understand him through writing…
